One of the many new products unveiled at ACT Expo 2016 is an on-site hydrogen fueling solution from SimpleFuel (Booth 1712).
SimpleFuel comprises a team of three companies originally assembled to compete for the Department of Energy’s H2 Refuel “H-Prize” award: IVYS Energy Solutions, PDC Machines, and McPhy Energy.
Team representatives noted that SimpleFuel is the only company remaining in the H-Prize competition after two down-selections, with the only remaining activities involving delivery on the metrics during a demonstration later this year.
“It’s the combination of the abilities of the three organizations that ‘makes the magic,’” says Prabhu Rao, North American CEO for McPhy Energy.
The consortium has meanwhile unveiled “a hydrogen filling appliance that’s designed to provide cost-effective fueling.”
“We are putting it forth as a product that supports the development of the hydrogen infrastructure in California and other parts of the country,” explained Rao. “And what you see here is an integrated generation-compression-storage-dispense solution that uses water and electricity to generate high purity hydrogen at rates of approximately 10 kilograms per day dispensing at 700 bar and can satisfy a fleet of about 15 to 20 cars.”
“So, for about the same cost of one large station, we can deploy between ten and 15 of these, avoiding the fuel anxiety that some customers have,” he said.
Rao said that potential future applications include home fueling, workplace fueling, fleets and small retail stations.
“It’s very cost-effective in terms of capital,” he adds. “The footprint is very small and permitting is also easier because of the simplicity of the product.”
Asked about production possibilities, Rao said that the company is currently “building one for a customer” that will be delivered in September.
“Then we’re looking to ramp it up,” he said. “This is an appliance model of a solution. And when we say appliance you know that volume is behind it.”

PDC Machines showcased its new diaphragm compressor at the 12th International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo 2016 at the Tokyo Big Sight, Japan, 2nd to 4th March 2016
PDC Machines, along with it’s Japanese partner Tokyo Boeki Machanics displayed it’s latest hydrogen compression technology which included PDC Machines 3 stage compressor boosting hydrogen gas from 6 barg/187 psig to 950 barg/13,778 psi providing a flow of 340 Nm3/hr. Motor size is 180 kW/241 hp.
After careful review of six submissions, an independent panel of judges for the U.S. Department of Energy’s H2 Refuel H-Prize selected Team SimpleFuelTM, which includes PDC Machines, as the finalist for the competition organized to develop an affordable small-scale hydrogen refueling system.
Warminster, PA USA February 11, 2016 – PDC Machines- the world leader in hydrogen compression solutions for hydrogen refueling stations and energy applications- along with its partners IVYS Energy Solutions (Massachusetts) and McPhy Energy North America (Massachusetts), is part of Team SimpleFuelTM which has been selected by an independent panel of judges and safety experts to develop a hydrogen refuelling solution as a part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) H2 Refuel H-Prize Competition.
This competition was launched by the DOE’s Fuel Cell Technologies Office (FCTO) and the Hydrogen Education Foundation (HEF) in October 2014 to develop small-scale hydrogen refueling systems which can be used in homes, community centers, retail sites, or similar locations to fuel hydrogen vehicles. Such solutions will enable the broad adoption of hydrogen infrastructure across the country by providing another convenient fueling option for U.S. consumers adopting fuel cell electric vehicles.
Team SimpleFuelTM will have until July 2016 to deploy their home scale refueling system and prepare it for testing. The SimpleFuel™ Home Vehicle Refueling Appliance is a fully integrated hydrogen generation, compression, storage and dispensing system capable of delivering up to 5 kg/day of hydrogen to vehicles at pressures up to 700 bar using hydrogen produced via electrolysis, with a design that minimizes setback distances and reduces its physical footprint. The project has been approved and permitted by Warwick Township and will be installed at PDC Machines Plant 2 location.
Data collection will end in October 2016 and will be used to determine if the SimpleFuel™ Home Vehicle Refueling Appliance meets the technical and cost criteria to win the $1 million prize.

On Friday August 21st, Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick visited PDC Machines. Congressman Fitzpatrick is a member of the Republican Party serving as the U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania’s 8th congressional district.
During his visit, PDC highlighted its capabilities in supplying compression systems and it’s active involvement as a component supplier, promoting the growth of commercial hydrogen refueling stations.

Fuel cells generate electricity using an electrochemical reaction, not combustion, so there are no polluting emissions, only water and heat as by-products. Many fuel cells are fueled with hydrogen, which can be derived from a wide range of sources, both traditional and renewable. This includes wind-powered electrolysis, the process of running electricity through water to generate hydrogen and oxygen. Since a fuel cell produces water as a by-product, it can become a sustainable closed-loop system.
The variable nature of wind lowers the efficiency of wind turbines, but fuel cells can provide base-load power that ensures a facility stays powered during times of low or no wind.
In areas with abundant wind, hydrogen and fuel cells are becoming a viable energy storage option. Power-to-Gas (P2G) projects, where the excess electrical energy can be used to produce hydrogen, are on the rise in Europe, mainly Germany, and many incorporate wind turbines. The hydrogen produced via wind electrolysis can then be injected into existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure, or stored and used at a later time to generate electricity in a stationary fuel cell or used to fuel up fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
Interest in renewable power generation, and solar power in particular, is growing quickly in the United States in both the residential and utility markets. Unfortunately, when the sun is not shining, in inclement weather or at night, solar can be a limited power resource. Fuel cells are the perfect partner, able to generate supplemental power if solar resources are low during the day, or by providing electricity at night.
A synergy between the two technologies is further emphasized when using solar electrolysis to generate 100% renewable hydrogen that can be used for onsite fuel cell power generation or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) fueling.
Fuel cells generate electricity using an electrochemical reaction, not combustion, producing zero or near-zero polluting emissions, depending on the fuel source. For larger stationary fuel cell systems, natural gas is the most common feedstock, relying on the widespread infrastructure of natural gas pipelines throughout the U.S. Some natural gas-fueled fuel cells have been running for more than a decade.
Fuel Cells and Natural Gas Benefits
Fuel cells are providing both primary power and back-up power to hundreds of sites across the country in a range of applications, including data centers, utilities, businesses, condominiums, grocers, hospitals, and more. Able to be installed as part of the electric grid, or in parallel to it, fuel cells provide seamless and reliable power without disruption due to grid failure or blackouts.

Many facilities, such as wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), landfills, food/beverage processing facilities, wineries, breweries, dairies, large industrial factory farms and confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), generate tons of organic waste as a byproduct of daily operations, be it sewage, effluent, food or animal waste, all of which can be expensive to remove and burdensome to store. These sites often use an anaerobic digester to convert the organic waste into methane or anaerobic digester gas (ADG), and then burn the ADG, in a combustion-based generator or flare it into the atmosphere to dispose of it. Although ADG is considered carbon-neutral since it is derived from an organic (non-fossil) source, flaring or burning leads to releases of direct and indirect GHGs and other air pollutants. Since ADG contains hydrogen, which is the fuel of choice for fuel cells, a cleaner, more efficient option is to use the gas in a fuel cell to generate electricity and heat for the plant, following a gas cleanup step.

commitments to increase production and sales in the next few years, many misconceptions and myths are being perpetuated by critics and those unfamiliar with the technology.
Fuel cells generate electricity using a chemical reaction, not combustion, to unleash a fuel’s latent energy. They are clean, quiet, efficient, and scalable, making fuel cells an excellent option in nearly every power application, including transportation.

PDC has delivered the compressor to a leading manufacturer of H2Station® hydrogen refueling stations which has supplied a Hydrogen Refueling Station in Hamburg for a major infrastructure provider in Germany which is part of a planned 50 station network in the country.

H2 Logic delivers hydrogen fueling station for Hamburg – first to achieve German CEP approval
Shell Deutschland Oil GmbH inaugurated a new hydrogen fueling station in Hamburg Monday 16 Marts based on H2Station® technology from H2 Logic. The fueling station is the first in Germany to obtain a 2014 approval from the Public‐Private Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) after extensive third party acceptance and verification tests. This ensures that vehicle users experiences a fast and reliable fueling of hydrogen with long driving range, similar to that of gasoline vehicles.
The 20th World Hydrogen Energy Conference 2014 International Conference and Exhibition was held on June 15 – 20, 2014 at the Kimdaejung Convention Center, Gwangju, Korea.
The world’s hydrogen and fuel cell community came together in Gwangju, Korea for the World Hydrogen Energy Conference 2014 (WHEC 2014). The event covered hydrogen products, hydrogen distribution infrastructure, hydrogen storage, hydrogen component/ equipment manufacture, fuel cell manufacture, fuel cell vehicles and renewable energy.
An Air Force Research Laboratory project demonstrated its mission capability during a power outage at Joint Air and Naval Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH), Hawaii, Dec. 5.
A containerized hydrogen fuel cell back-up power solution commissioned by Hydrogenics Corporation, proved successful when it quickly engaged to replace power to its designated areas during the outage which affected the base for nearly 12 hours.
“The fuel cell system didn’t miss a beat, not even a single hertz,” said Mark Schultz, site manager for HydraFLX Systems, operator of the Hydrogen Station under a cooperative agreement with AFRL’s Advanced Power Technology Office (APTO).
The system was used to enable the continued operation of the Hickam Hydrogen Station, providing for the hydrogen fleet at JBPHH. This real world event proved to be a demonstration of the utility of Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology.
“The Hydrogenics fuel cell systems produced very high quality electrical power all night long – not a flicker, blip, dip or trip all night. No faults, warnings, nor any failures,” added Schultz. “We’re extremely pleased Hydrogenics backed up these proof-of concept trials. Our work resulted in a shining moment for fuel cells going toe-to-toe with our diesel counterparts.”
Hydrogen alternatives reduce the Air Force’s reliance on petroleum fuels for ground based vehicles and equipment through the adoption of alternative, renewable energy sources.
“If this had been a more serious crisis situation such as an earthquake or hurricane, in addition to demonstrating a fully off the grid Hydrogen Refueling Station, we would’ve also been filling the fuel cell vehicles as an emergency response fleet. We had enough fuel to power the station for 10 days and 10,000 road miles of equivalent hydrogen energy to the Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs).”
Hydrogenics fuel cell power modules are currently powering a number of FCVs, including buses that operate around the base.
“Events such as the outage at JBPHH help underscore the capabilities of hydrogen based power generation for critical applications,” said Daryl Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of Hydrogenics. “We salute the members of AFRL and HCATT for their forward thinking in applying this technology for the Hydrogen Station at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.” The fuel cell system project is an effort under AFRL’s Advanced Power Technology Office. The APTO program executes technology development and demonstration of alternative energy technologies on behalf of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force, Energy.

Diaphragm compressors are the preferred choice when contamination-free and leak-tight gas compression is required. Diaphragm compression achieves its high purity compression by isolating the pulsating hydraulic fluid from the process gas with a set of triple metallic diaphragms and a set of static seals. The reciprocating piston moves a column of high pressure hydraulic oil through a fixed cavity, which allows the diaphragms to compress and pump the process media.
PDC utilizes the latest technology in cavity contour design, diaphragm processing technology and metallurgical design to provide the longest lasting diaphragm life in the industry.
The typical markets for diaphragm compressors include:
• The industrial gases industry including transfilling, cylinder and tube trailer filling stations, and gas distribution markets such as helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, and argon among others.
• The specialty gases industry including electronics gases (silane, specialty gas blends), calibration gases among others.
• The alternative energy sectors including the hydrogen energy sectors, compressed natural gas applications and biogas industries.
PDC leads the industry in diaphragm life and our typical client reports between 6000 and 8000 hours of operating life from PDC machines diaphragms.
Low operating temperatures
Diaphragm compressors are well-suited for applications ranging from vacuum to pressure as high as 60,000 psig [4136 BARG]. Diaphragm compression is very unique in that compression application that could require three to five stages on traditional types of compressors, in diaphragm compressors can be done in one to two stages.

This is due to heat being dissipated in the mass of the large surface area of the compressor head assembly(s), the presence of pulsing oil and integral cooling of the compressor heads. Typically, diaphragm compression can run 20-60% cooler on outlet temperatures than other types of compression technology. This inherent advantage enables downstream cost benefits including lower operating and maintenance costs. PDC compressors run a compression cycle that is more isentropic than adiabatic and this enables – in certain applications – compression ratios as high as 100:1.
High efficiency and low-power
From an efficiency perspective, diaphragm compressors provide outstanding results.
Due to horizontally opposed crankcase designs, PDC compressors, for example,
can achieve up to 33% brake horsepower reduction in running power, as opposed to traditional in-line opposed designs with high suction pressures.
Volumetric efficiencies run between 87% and 94% depending on the compressor size, and isentropic efficiencies upwards of 90%. This all correlates to maximizing the return on the capex spent with low power requirements and high efficiencies.
Integral hydraulic lube oil system
With all PDC compressors, automatic priming pumps are included as a standard, eliminating the priming problems typically associated with gravity-fed lube oil pumps or hand crank devices. This automatic system works in tandem with an automatic injection pump assembly which injects a fixed volume of oil into the compressor head assemblies during each suction stroke.
This injection pump acts as a compensation pump device, compensating for the following:
• Normal oil leakages past the high pressure oil piston
• Compressibility of the oil under high pressure
• Providing for over-pump to ensure the diaphragm makes a complete sweep of the process cavity, enabling full efficiency during each compression stroke.
Standard diaphragm or seal failure leak detection systems are provided on all PDC diaphragm compressors. This interlock stops the compressor upon a failure of either a process or oil side diaphragm or seal.
Due to the inherent nature of diaphragm compressors, there is no possibility of leakage of the process media to the atmosphere, the crankcase or into the hydraulic oil. This enables the compression of pyrophoric, explosive, radioactive and other hazardous gases, without the need to purge crankcases or manage gas leakage past the main seals.

Sukan Engineering show cased PDC’s diaphragm compressors at the recently concluded 35th Seminar on Industrial Gases organized by All India Industrial Gases Manufacturers Association (AIIGMA) on 20TH, 21ST and 22ND January 2013 was held in Hotel Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.
The Seminar was a stupendous success with participation of over 270 delegates from major gas manufacturers from different parts of India and all over the World. The fuel gas industry has taken prominence in the world-wide transportation sector for many years now. Be it for transportation, material handling or power plant applications, the fuel sector is part of the dialogue in the national and international lexicon like never before.

Hydrogen Fueling Stations Open in Norway and Switzerland with Hydrogenics Electrolyzers and PDC Machines Compressors.
The city of Oslo, Norway inaugurated a hydrogen fueling station which uses two Hydrogenics HySTAT™ Electrolyzers to convert renewable electricity to hydrogen fuel. The launch was hosted by the Mayor of Akershus County, Nils Aage Jegstad, in coorporation with the Vice Mayor for Environment and Transport in Oslo, Ola Elvestuen and The Managing Director of Ruter, Bernt Reitan Jenssen. Ruters, a public transport company made the investment, backed by both European (under the CHIC project) and National funding.

In light of all of this turmoil, tremendous industry learning and growth is taking place in key sectors worldwide.
In North America, for example, the material handling market is proving to be an early commercialisation opportunity for industrial gas suppliers, component suppliers, and small and large warehouse distribution centres taking advantage of the inherent advantages of hydrogen powered forklifts.

Cylinder filling compressor operations: A case study

In the industrial gas industry, transfilling sites relied on the delivery of large tube trailers of packaged gases to be transfilled and compressed into bulk packs and individual cylinders for the packaged gas industry. For years filling centres would conduct the operation and leave a small amount of gas left in the tube trailer (500 psi worth) and return the trailer and get credit on the unused gas.
This was the most expedient approach. However, with the increase in worldwide energy and commodity costs the trend changed to empty the trailer as much as possible. PDC Machines has been supplying diaphragm compression systems for these types of cylinder filling centers for decades. Historically, PDC has been supplying two models, one for slow fills and one for fast fills.
