PDC compressor installed at Mogalakwena, South Africa
by Africa Mining Insight
∙ August 14, 2025
Powering Africa’s Green Mining Future with Hydrogen
The mining industry sits at a pivotal junction in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions. While it supplies the critical minerals needed for clean technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, and batteries, mining itself contributes 4–7% of global emissions.

Fortunately a transformation is underway, led by trailblazing hydrogen innovations that are reshaping mining operations for a sustainable future.   One of the most promising paths toward decarbonization is hydrogen energy, which is rapidly gaining traction in mining. Hydrogen provides a versatile, scalable clean energy option for emission-intensive processes like electricity generation, long-duration storage, and perhaps most notably, heavy-duty vehicle fueling. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have a clear advantage over traditional battery-powered systems in the remote environments where mines operate; offering faster fueling times and longer range. Even so, for hydrogen to be viable, it must be safely compressed, stored, and delivered at very high pressures.   Click here to read full article

PDC Machines Lessons from early hydrogen refuelling stations news photo
By Charlie Currie, H2 View
∙ July 8, 2025
Lessons from early hydrogen refuelling stations
Hydrogen refuelling infrastructure has reached a critical learning stage, with early station deployments revealing insights into elements of station design, integration, and operation that could improve future developments.

Tom Phillips, Production Engineering Manager at diaphragm compression system maker PDC Machines, told H2 View that early stations were designed with high utilisation in mind, but lower than expected usage and system complexity led to various challenges.

“I think we, as an industry, tried to go very quickly into automobiles,” he said. “But I think the equipment manufacturers were not really suited for that.”

He explained that many of the components and sub-systems that make up refuelling stations are often repurposed from other industries. And while they can work for hydrogen refuelling, poor system integration and the sporadic nature of car refuelling led to stations going offline.
